With the video of Baltimore Ravens’s player Ray Rice beating his then-fiancee has circulated around the internet and many kids might have questions about domestic violence.
There’s a few good things to keep in mind when approaching this with kids. As always, talks are also a good way to create bonding with children and let them know they live in a safe home.
1, Keep the lines of communication open. Be open to their questions, even if they ask you about spousal arguments in their home, and be willing to answer their questions truthfully.
2. Try to talk regularly with older children who may be in a relationship and monitoring, and helping them, monitor controlling behaviors in who they date.
3. Talk about what healthy relationships look like and try to set a good example of that with your spouse or significant other regularly.
