Research has shown that religion and spirituality are linked to psychosocial well-being in children and adults.
For example, youth who attend religious services with parent(s) have fewer problems as teens; adolescents who attend religious services with parent(s) have higher well-being and academic success and less substance abuse and delinquent behavior. Spirituality is considered a “protective factor”: increasing the ability to cope with adversity, strengthening social bonds, and creating a sense of meaning and purpose.
The field of “Relational Spirituality” focuses on how spiritual beliefs and behaviors lead to better family relationships. Some believe that parents and children invest more emotionally in their relationships by viewing those connections as “sacred.” Do you incorporate R/S in your therapeutic work with individuals and families?
How do you deal with your own R/S beliefs(or lack of) with those of your clients?
