In the journal Science (1-15-15, online), 18 researchers conclude that in the coming decades, our planet could cease to be a “safe operating space” for humans beings.

They suggest we have destabilized the environment and crossed four “planetary boundaries:

– extinction of species
– deforestation
– carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere
– nitrogen and phosphorus (i.e.,fertilizers) flowing into the oceans.

NASA and NOAA just released consistent data: In 2014, the world had its hottest year (in 135 years of record-keeping), driven by rising ocean temperatures. Nine of the 10 hottest years have occurred since 2000.
